
7. Recognition of Loss & Grief
Centres of Excellence and Care & Support Workers Extensions
To acknowledge loss and grief services within agencies and loss and grief services within self help groups NALAG (VIC) has introduced a System of recognition of loss and grief 'Centres of Excellence'. The agency/self help group will be involved in volunteer or professional care, support, counseling, education or research. Successful applicants will be awarded a certificate of recognition as a loss and grief 'Centre of Excellence'.
7.1 Recognition of Agencies or Services within Agencies
Applications must be on the official Application Form and include the required attachments.
Cost: There is a once-off application fee of $90.00 to have an
application assessed
Purpose
To acknowledge and recognise loss and grief services within agencies.
Service Requirements
Loss and grief services seeking accreditation must:
state their philosophical direction, and
demonstrate their policies and practices for volunteer workers providing loss and grief supports, including recruitment, selection, training, supervision & debriefing, clearly defined job roles, etc..
Loss and grief services must demonstrate policy and practices on key management areas such as:
protecting the rights of service users,
preserving the confidentiality of service users,
Protecting the rights of volunteers and paid workers,
complaint/grievance mechanisms for service users and volunteers,
maintaining appropriate service records,
referral processes,
service user assessment, and
service evaluation
Loss and grief services must adhere to NALAG (VIC) policies and principles of practice including:
Code of Ethics
Principles and Standards of Practice (relevant version)
Professionals Engaged by the Service
Loss and grief practitioners engaged in the services must be accredited or in the process of accrediting with NALAG (VIC).
Volunteers Engaged by the Service
Training Programs
Loss and grief training programs conducted by the service for volunteer workers must:
Be appropriate to the training needs of the loss and grief volunteer roles,
be recognised by NALAG (VIC) and consist of: Care & Support: a minimum of 20 hours initial training for care & support areas which aim to give participants confidence in themselves to listen, share and offer hope from their own experiences and include information on the following areas:
- loss, grief & trauma
- communication skills
- ethics/confidentiality
- boundaries and referral processes, and
- caring for the carer.
Peer Support/Group Facilitation or Leadership: an additional minimum of 30 hours for peer support/ group facilitators which includes information and practice on the following:
- types of groups,
- value of groups,
- group formation,
- facilitation techniques,
- the role of the facilitator,
- group dynamics, and
- monitoring, evaluation & terminating groups.
Ongoing Annual Training :
Must be provided on the basis of a minimum of 6 hours ongoing annual training for all volunteers.
Must be delivered by Trainers who have as a minimum Train the Trainer Level 1 qualifications or equivalent proven skills as a trainer.
Support and debriefing for loss and grief volunteer workers should be provided by relevant practitioners, on the basis of 1 hour for every 10 hours of service user contact.
7.2 Recognition as a Care and Support Worker
Purpose
To acknowledge a basic working knowledge in the field of loss and
grief community care and support work NALAG (VIC) has introduced
a System of recognition of Loss & Grief support workers. The
support worker will be involved in volunteer or professional care
and support.or research. Successful applicants will be awarded a
letter of recognition as a loss and grief care and support worker.
Applications must be on the official Application Form and
include the required attachments. Cost There is a once-off
application fee of $60.00 ($30.00 volunteers) to
have an application assessed.
Education
Recognised carers, support workers, community workers Courses and Programs that have a main focus on loss and grief issues. Course/s equivalents single or combined must total a minimum of 80 hours.
Work Experience
Demonstrated care and support role for a minimum of 200 hours within a 2 year period, working in loss and grief areas, e.g., voluntary or paid support, care, etc.. work in a hospice, community program, self help group, etc..
Applicants must be general members of the Association.
Applications must include the following attachments:
Letters of Reference & Recommendation
One letter of character reference
One letter of recommendation for recognition from a loss and grief service or practitioner
Verification of courses attended
Letter from the agency attesting to hours of work experience in a loss and grief support role
Agreement & Adherence to NALAG (VIC ) Code of Ethics
Sign the NALAG (VIC) Code of Ethics

EXTENSIONS
8.1. Extensions to Professional Accreditation
Applications for extensions must be on the official Application Form and include the required attachments. Cost: There is a once-off application fee of $55.00 for extensions to the counsellor accreditation
Extensions to the Counsellor Accreditation are:
- Counselling Supervisor
- Therapuetic Groupwork
- Crisis Aftermath Response Team member
An applicant may apply for an accreditation extension when applying for accreditation. There is no additional cost in this case. If the extension is applied for separately a once off fee of $55.00 is charged. There is no annual fee for extensions.
8.1.1 Counselling Supervisor Extension
Purpose
To acknowledge a basic working knowledge in general supervision of counsellors plus a special expertise in supervision of loss and grief counselling.
General Education & Practice & Loss & Grief Education & Practice
Same as accreditation requirements for a Loss and Grief Counsellor
A minimum of three years loss and grief counselling and/or general supervision within the last five years.
Supervision Education
Completion of a recognised Counselling Supervisor's Course which includes 30 hours on the theory and process of supervision. See recognised Accreditation category courses.
Loss & Grief Supervision Experience
A minimum of 40 hours individual supervised supervision in loss and grief areas.
8.1.2 Therapeutic Group Work Extension
Purpose
To acknowledge a specialist working knowledge in the field of loss and grief counselling and therapeutic group work.
General Education & Practice & Loss & Grief Education & Practice
Same as accreditation requirements for a Loss and Grief Counsellor.
A minimum of three years loss and grief counselling within the last five years.
Therapeutic Group Work Education
Completion of a recognised therapeutic group work course which includes 40 hours on the theory and process of therapeutic group work. See recognised Accreditation category courses.
Therapeutic Group Work Practice
A minimum of 100 hours supervised experience facilitating therapeutic groups work in loss and grief areas.
8.1.3 Crisis Aftermath Response Team Extension
Purpose
To acknowledge an ability to undertake and provide crisis aftermath response counselling, support and debriefing.
A minimum of three years loss and grief counselling and/or general supervision within the last five years.
Crisis Aftermath Education
Completion of a recognised course/program which is focussed on crisis, trauma, disaster, response, recovery and debriefing theory perspectives. Course/s equivalents must total a minimum of 100 hours. See recognised Accreditation category courses.
Crisis Aftermath Practice
Demonstrated work experience in the treatment of 4 individual/family trauma cases or participation in a crisis aftermath response situation.

8.2 Extensions to Care & Support Recognition
Extension to the Care and Support Worker recognition are

An applicant may apply for an extension and a letter of recognition. There is no application fee charged for care & support extension applications.
8.3.1. Care & Support - Telephone Support Extension
Purpose
To acknowledge a working knowledge in the field of loss and grief telephone support.
Telephone Support Education & Practice
Completion of accreditation requirements for Care & Support General accreditation category.
Plus
Completion of a recognised telephone support course equivalent to 40 hours theory and 40 hours supervised telephone support practice.
Plus:
Loss & Grief Education
Successful completion of recognised courses/programs which have a main focus on loss and grief issues. Equivalents, single or combined must total a minimum of 40 hours of loss and grief theory. See recognised Accreditation category courses listed on pages xxx

8.3.2. Care & Support - Group Facilitator Extension
Purpose
To acknowledge a working knowledge in the field of loss and grief care and support work, and expertise in loss and grief group facilitation.
Group Facilitation Education
Completion of accreditation requirements for Care & Support General accreditation category.

Completion of a recognised Group Work/Facilitation course/s which total a minimum of 20 hours theory.

Group Facilitation Practice
Completion of a minimum of 12 hours of general group facilitation experience outside of general education course requirements.
