4. Professional Accreditation - Counselling/Education

4.1 Counsellor

Purpose

To acknowledge a specialist working knowledge in the field of loss and grief counselling. Applicants seeking accreditation in Loss and Grief counselling must meet the following criteria.

REQUIREMENTS

General Education

General Education must include a minimum of a three year degree or two year diploma in the areas of health, social sciences, social welfare, social work, psychology, nursing, education, theology medicine.

Counselling Theory

You must have completed a minimum of 40 hours counseling theory in your degree or specialist counseling diploma or you must have completed a qualification subsequent to your degree or diploma that includes 40 hours counseling theory and is an assessment based course .
Counselling Practice
Minimum of 120 hours of counselling practice (25 hours of this counselling must have been supervised clinical counselling) . Counselling field placements may be included. Where all your counseling practice has been in the loss and grief field you will be required to have achieved 200 hours of loss and grief counseling practice. Plus

 

Loss & Grief Counselling Theory

Option 1:   Successful completion of loss and grief specific education/training covering theory and counseling techniques which comprise a minimum of 80 hours. See recognised Accreditation category courses listed on page 10. 

Option 2: Loss and Grief theory and counseling techniques may have been completed as a unit or major of your general education degree/diploma (see requirement 1, above). If your loss and grief education is part of an undergraduate degree, diploma or specialist diploma you must provide an academic transcript and a course outline for the appropriate loss and grief unit/s. Where this requirement (requirement 4) is met by loss and grief units in an undergraduate degree or diploma the Assessment and Accreditation Board may require;

•  that applicants complete further specialist training in loss and grief

•  that applicants attend supervision with a NALAG accredited supervisor for a specified number of hours

•  that applicants attend an interview with 2 Board members

Option 3:    Research (Postgraduate) with major study and demonstrated focus on loss and grief. Plus minimum 40 hours training in loss and grief counselling techniques.

Loss & Grief Counselling Practice

Completion of a minimum of 80 hours (within a two year period) of direct (individual) loss and grief counselling. Plus

Supervision

A minimum of 20 hours individual supervision preferably with a NALAG recognised supervisor or a supervisor with formal counseling qualification with at least five years experience and who is experienced in loss and grief.

  The Accreditation Board reserves the right to request applicants to undertake additional professional development and/or additional clinical supervision as it deems necessary. Special consideration may be given to applicants who have achieved their loss and grief training and practice, but do not meet the general education requirement, and who service CALD, disabled, aged, or Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander communities.

 

4.2   Educator

Purpose

To acknowledge a basic working knowledge in education and training plus a special expertise in loss and grief education and training.

REQUIREMENTS

General Education

General Education must include a minimum of a three year degree or two year diploma in the areas of health, social sciences, social welfare, social work, psychology, nursing, education, theology or medicine and;

Option 1:   Recognised educational/teaching qualifications

Option 2:   Trainer qualifications (Such as train the trainer)

Option 3:   A minimum of 120 hours demonstrated direct experience in education/training program delivery. (not necessarily in the loss and grief field)

 

Loss & Grief Education

Work Experience

Minimum of 80 hours experience teaching/training in loss and grief areas within the last five years of employment.
