Inside Your Feelings: Children Dealing with Loss & Grief

Grief is one of the hardest human emotions to bear. Children, especially, often find it hard to handle the complexity of feelings involved, and may struggle to make sense of their experience of loss and change.

Inside Your Feelings is a powerful educational video which has been produced in response to the needs of children and those who teach and counsel them. It provides both boys and girls with a range of creative ways to deal with and express their grief. It also helps children realise that grief is a normal human experience.

Inside Your Feelings explores the experience of grief after sibling death and parental separations. The two characters in the video, Tim and Kelly, highlight the personal nature of grief and the uniqueness of individual grieving styles.

Tim is a twelve year old boy whose brother Chris died two years earlier in a bike accident. Tim has experienced intense feelings of helplessness, anger and sadness. He is now able to be with his feelings and gains comfort from calling up memories of his brother.

Kelly is an eight year old girl who is struggling in the early stages of grief after family break up. Kelly is expressing confusion, disbelief, anger and helplessness as she tries to understand why her Dad left home.

Inside Your Feelings explores the relationship between Tim and Kelly and highlights the value of sharing the experience of grief with a friend or peer who has had a similar experience. Although finding it difficult to comprehend the loss, both Tim and Kelly experience comfort and reassurance from talking together about their experience of grief.

"A fantastic resource for those who want to assist a grieving child."

Speaking from Experience:
Grief & Older People: Older People Living with Loss & Grief

This video is an educational resource produced by Speaking From Experience in conjunction with NALAG (VIC) 1999.

Stories of loss & grief, spanning a lifetime in many instances, provide a rich and sensitive portrayal of the experiences of some older people in our community.

'We want to be noticed
We want to be accepted
We don't want to be made invisible'

Whilst the process of ageing may reflect a time of great achievement, satisfaction and excitement, it is not uncommon for some older people to feel isolated and concerned about some aspects of their life - past, present or future. For some, experiences of family isolation, social withdrawal, decline in health, role or status, death of a partner, family member or friend create a great sense of loss and grief. As people age, anticipated, actual and more often, multiple losses go unrecognised and unacknowledged. In some instances, the older people in our society are disenfranchised, devalued and stigmatised.

Speaking From Experience: Grief & Older People is a gracious and timely representation that will evoke emotions and raise consciousness for all who view it - regardless of age. Those in the video are truly speaking from experience. Their voices are authentic, poignant and candid and their stories are varied, yet complementary. Each story highlights human vulnerability and resilience. Each illustrates both the pain and hope that grief demands.

There's not a day I don't wish I could read that paper......
When I do something like filling my tea up to the rim because
I can't see how far the tea is rising.....There are periods of
exasperation.....(Edith)

Speaking From Experience: Grief & Older People - Living with Loss & Grief is presented in six sections - My loss, Living with Loss, Growing Old, Family Ties, We're not Invisible and Closing Thoughts. The video provides the impetus for us to ask many questions about the losses and subsequent grief in growing old, while acknowledging the satisfaction and achievement of living to old age.

Speaking From Experience: Trauma, Loss & Grief: Victims of Crime

Trauma, Loss & Grief - Victims of Crime is a timely representation of the experiences of victims of crime and its impact on their lives. Their stories will evoke emotions, raise awareness and consciousness for all who view it - and contribute greatly to a broader community understanding of the issues and support needs of victims of crime.

Their voices are authentic, candid and courageous. Their stories are varied, their experiences unique, yet their journeys share common features of trauma, loss and healing, illustrating both the pain and hope that grief demands.

These stories give voice to survivors of crime - their experience, their quest for justice and their journeys of healing.
